Living a healthy life
Residing in the village of Mahadebpur in Howrah district of West Bengal, Manuara Begum has
been enduring a challenging lifestyle like all rural dwellers. The meager income of her husband,
Fazrul Rehman could hardly aid her in looking after the entire family. To make ends meet, she
set up her own business of embroidery three years earlier. However, had it not been for Bandhan’s
intervention, her newly initiated venture would have suffered an untimely death owing to insufficient funds.
Manuara explored the possibility of sustaining her business with the help of Bandhan.
She applied for a Suchana loan of Rs. 3,000 which was approved. With gradual increase
in her loan amounts for the next three years she was somehow able to look after her family.
Her perennial cash-strapped situation was changing. Unfortunately, just when things were improving,
misfortune befell the household when her husband fell from a tree and received severe injury
in his spinal cord. The doctors were not hopeful of his survival. There were high chances
of paralysis even if he survived.
Manuara ran helter-skelter to save her husband, but lack of enough money at her disposal
tied her hands. None of her relatives or neighbours were ready to financially support her
in this peril. Just when she was ready to give up all hope of curing her husband, a credit
officer of Bandhan visited her after hearing about her predicament. That visit turned out to
be blessing in true terms. He apprised her of Bandhan’s Suraksha (Health) loan which was
specifically meant for such medical exigencies.
Manuara immediately applied for a Suraksha loan of Rs. 5,000 which was instantaneously approved
considering her vulnerable situation. “The health loan from Bandhan saved me from becoming a widow”,
said Manuara with tears rolling down her cheeks. Needless to say, she utilized the amount to cure her
husband by visiting medical practitioners and buying medicines as per their advice. “Today, my husband
has resumed work owing to Bandhan’s timely help. I will forever be indebted to Bandhan,”
proclaimed Manuara with a smile.
