Bandhan marked its entry into the microfinance (MF) world in July 2002. We started with 3 staff (including myself) and 1 branch office in Howrah district in the state of West Bengal. Since then, there has been no looking back! Today we are operative in 14 states through a network of 1,008 branches with more than 2 million beneficiaries. We have disbursed a total of Rs. 3,686.61 crores (737.32 million US$) and our loan outstanding stands at Rs. 1,079.93 crore (215.99 million US$). We have a dedicated and committed work force of more than 6,000 people.

While our involvement in MF, we have realized that there is lot of other support that the poor need for their holistic development. Only MF is not the last word for the development of the poor.

Keeping this in mind, we have set up a separate wing for development programs and made intervention in important areas viz. education, health and the like. We have a specially designed program for the poorest of the poor (those who are not covered under the umbrella of MF). The focus during the FY 2009-10 is to further scale up these programs.

All such development / livelihood programs are carried on by Bandhan's not for profit entity. Whereas, financial services are under Bandhan Financial Services Pvt Ltd. (BFSPL), incorporated under the Companies Act, 1956 and also registered as a Non Banking Financial Company (NBFC) with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The above two entities of Bandhan group share a symbiotic relationship. Bandhan's inclination towards its double bottom-line values (financial & social impact in the poor community) is being clearly fulfilled through these two distinct entities.

Bandhan has had some major accomplishments and it is noteworthy to mention that all this recognition has been achieved in less than 8 years of work! Of course, this would not have been possible without the support and guidance of our lenders and well wishers. We have benefitted from the vast experience of our Board members who hail from diverse fields. The tremendous hard work and commitment that Bandhan team members display is commendable. However, our poor beneficiaries remain our real source of inspiration.
