Bandhan marked its entry into the microfinance world in July 2002. We started with 3 staff (including myself) and 1 branch office in Howrah district in the state of West Bengal. Since then, there has been no looking back! Today we are operative in 18 States & Union Territories through a network of over 1,553 branches with more than 3.5 million clients. We have disbursed more than Rs. 94,000 million till date and our loan book stands at Rs. 24,300 million. We have a dedicated and a committed workforce of 8,900 employees.

While delivering microfinance services, we realized that it is not the last word for the development of the poor. There is lot of other support that the poor need for their holistic development.

Keeping this in mind, we have set up a separate wing for development programs and made intervention in important areas viz. education, health, unemployment, horticulture, livelihood and the like. We also have a specially designed grant based program for the poorest of the poor, those who are by passed by microfinance. These development initiatives are now being scaled up.

The above development / livelihood programs are carried on by Bandhan’s not for profit entity. Whereas, financial services are being delivered through Bandhan Financial Services Pvt Ltd. (BFSPL), incorporated under the Companies Act, 1956 and also registered as a Non Banking Financial Company (NBFC) with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The above two entities of Bandhan group share a symbiotic relationship. Bandhan’s inclination towards its triple bottom-line values is being clearly fulfilled through these two distinct entities.

Bandhan has had some major accomplishments and it is noteworthy to mention that all these accolades have been achieved in just 9 years of work! Of course, this would not have been possible without the support and guidance of our lenders and well wishers. We have benefitted from the vast experience of our Board members who hail from diverse fields. The tremendous hard work and commitment that Bandhan team members display is commendable. However, our poor beneficiaries and clients remain our real source of inspiration. A big salute to them!
